Skins 3
***Warning: Not work place safe to read***
Skins 3 is a 10 episode British series that revolves around a group of college friends. It’s possible to just catch the 3rd season without the first two seasons because it’s a fresh start with only a returning character. Revolving around friendship, love, sex and drugs, each episode is named after a character and has that character as the star of that episode. What I personally feel is that characters are represented in the worse case scenarios and thus, Skins 3 is not to be taken too seriously though it’s entertaining to see how their relationships unfold.

The only surviving cast from the previous few seasons of Skins is Effy and she transfers to a new college. Thus begins her new life and her relationship with her new group of friends. Being a bad gal but with a rich daddy as backing, Effy goes dare devil mode and creates a whole load of mess. However, what’s redeemable of her is that she stands by her friends like Pandora and pushes both Emily and Naomi to resolve their love issues.

The actress staring as Effy resembles Avril Lavigne a little, don’t you think so?
The other babes are twins Katie and Emily, where Emily always lives in the shadows of Katie since she’s the younger twin. Pandora, who’s Effy best friend and is a little cranky in the head most of the time provides a lot of comic relief. Naomi, a strong-willed individual, was at first misunderstood by Katie but was slowly accepted into the group due to Emily’s persistence.

I love-hate Cook for this series. He’s always jovial and intentionally breaking all rules in schools. What’s worse is that he’s a human sex machine who can do any babes in anytime, anywhere. Always getting into trouble like fights and drugs, he’s the ultimate trouble maker. Fortunately, Cook has good buddies who would bill him out of worse case scenarios but as the series progresses, he becomes likable though he still hasn’t got his priorities right. The other dudes in the gang are Freddie who loves to skateboard, JJ who has high IQ but low EQ, and Thomas who has some problem adapting to UK culture since he’s a foreigner.
What’s interesting is that they’re aware of one another relationships but cannot see what’s in front of them. Effy, for example, knows that there’s something on-going between Emily and Naomi but just refuses to face up to her own relationship with Freddie. Naomi, on the other hand, knows that something is on-going between Effy and Freddie but she refuses to face up to her feelings to Emily.

Catch it only if you can stomach vulgarities because f**k and curses are present in every episode. Characters smoke, vandalize and some of them are a rowdy bunch so under-age folks please do not catch it. Hey! Why are you reading this post when you’re underage in the first place? :-) There will be a season 4 as announced but there’s no definite news of the plot and characters yet. From the exclusive interview with Lily Loveless of Skins (Naomi), filming of season 4 will begin end July. I’m happy because I’m guaranteed that some of Skins 3 cast will be back. Hopefully, Skins 4 will be out by early next year.

It would be nice if they made an American-adaptation on this. Right?

Ah… Strange how I recently got interested in Skins just because a significant part of my past tertiary education was in Bristol, UK. I saw them filming once at College Green, the patch of grass next to the City Council House and the Bristol Cathedral. Back then, I thought those group of people were filming for an advertisement until I saw the exact scene on TV several months later. Had a bit of a shock
. Too bad I didn’t know about this series that time. I would’ve stuck around for an autograph or something. :p
Also, I admit I used to be a tad bit annoyed by their presence at College Green because whenever they film there, a mobile coffee station I frequently went to have to take the day off. :p

Skins 3 is messy enough that I don’t think that an American version would be advisable. As you know Hollywood blows things up, bigger.
Thanks for sharing your experience in UK with us. Ah it’s a pity that you didn’t know that they’re the cast for Skins or you would have gotten their signatures! Next time perhaps, when you’re back in UK. (:

Wrong… why does everything have to be americanised? Just watch it and enjoy it within the cultural context it was made in. I can’t believe that someone who has watched Akira Kurasowa’s masterpieces like The Seven Samurai be turned into The magnificent Seven, as well as other pieces butchered into cheap Clint Eastwood movies condone more of the same. Please! – enjoy the differences and if you don’t get it or understand it, do some homework like I have to when I watch anime.
