Interesting Last Semester
If I pass all my modules, this will officially be my last semester. For this semester, I took 2 History, 1 Southeast Asian, 1 Political Science and 1 Science module. The Science module (Drugs and Society) is the most practical out of all as I can apply what I have learn to my day to day life. Political Science, though very theory based, gives a better understanding into the different school of thoughts there are in the international system. Though I don’t buy any, they’re interesting to learn. For the history and Southeast Asian modules, as I’m staying in Southeast Asia, what I learn neither strike as particularly interesting nor something unexpectedly new. Hence, I’ll be sharing lesser of what I learn from those modules.
Just like before, behold the below!
1. There is such a thing as “Caffeinism” where it is the excessive use of caffeine and research has shown its relationship with cancers (ovaries, colon and kidneys).
2. More than 300 mg of caffeine per day by a woman can reduce her chance of becoming pregnant, increase the chances of spontaneous abortion and slow the growth rate of fetus.
3. Till date, there is still no antidote for some poisons like Strychine.
4. Lethal injection as a form of capital punishment involves the administration of three drugs one after the other – Sodium thiopental, Pancuronium bromide, and Potassium Chloride.
5. Euthanasia is legal only in a few countries like Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
6. Concurrently taking an OTC1 cold mixture and a prescribed cough mixture can led to fatal stroke if both contain phenyl propylamine.
7. In Singapore, Sibutramine and Orlistat are the two approved drugs for weight loss.
8. Balding got to do with testosterone so females rarely bald as their hair only becomes lesser/thinner.
9. There is no clear definitive account of entities that were part of Southeast in the past as the term “Southeast Asia” only came about during World War II.
10. Wang Dayuan made 2 major trips where one was he recorded the presence of Danmaxi (Temasek also known aa present day Singapore) and Wang’s records was one of the earliest recordings of Temasek.
11. “States make war, and war makes states.” – Charles Tilly
12. States war over resources like cropland (Soccer War of 1969) and fish (Anglo-Icelandic Cod War of 1972-73).
13. The keramat cult is still practiced in Malaysia. They’re those altars found in conspicuous corners where worshipers believe that they will bring good luck, fortune and a peace of mind.
14. There are terms like the “Pink dollar” and “Pink industry”. Pink industry is used to describe the industry where books, magazines, films and movies on the queers are produced and marketed, while the pink dollar is the money made from those.

Interesting tidbits. I miss science classes a lot, particularly biology and health-related subjects, though I can’t say any health class I ever took was very good.
