Let The Right One In – Probably One of the Best Vampire Film
I caught the movie with my buddies and it was awesome. As the movie is in Swedish but with English subtitles, only a few cinemas are screening the show with limited show slots per day. We arrived late in an almost packed theater and missed the first few minutes but it was nothing important right? Someone please tell me that I have not missed anything important.

“Let The Right One In” is well paced, intriguing yet disturbing. It tells a beautiful tale of the love between 2 kids, Oskar and Eli, where one of them happens to be a vampire. Beautifully portrayed to present the inter-relations between vampire and human, it touches on many human issues like love, friendship and trust.
The characters are plain and normal looking. They’re kids, they’re parents of kids and they’re trying to make end’s meet. Thus, a degree of realism is evoked from the start. The film is horrifying. It is definitely horrifying because the vampire of this series is not into gimmicks like scaring victims or playing with the food. Expect gore, lots of gore for this series. Though so, I feel that the humans are actually the more horrifying ones for this flick instead.
The special effects are “wow” and I was shocked at a particular fire scene. It was unexpected and amplified to the extent that my jaws dropped. There’s no laser effect or anything high tech in the film but supernatural moves are performed with much craft that the moves are captivating. The other “wow” scene would be the one where the vampire enters the human house without invite. The aftermath is shocking.

On a minor note, I get to learn more of the Swedish school culture after watching the flick. Seriously I didn’t know that Swedish kids wear different “distinguished outfits” for their physical education lessons. I’m also amazed with the “water dance” as a school curriculum because there’s no such thing over here in Singapore. What intrigues me most is perhaps the weather because I have never been through winter and never seen real snow in my life. With the aid of snow, a degree of mysteriousness is added to the film.
I feel that “Let The Right One In” has what it takes to be one of the best vampire film for the year or one of the best vampire films around. Doubt my words? Catch it for yourself and let me know what you think. (:

Wow, I never even knew you could watch Swedish films in Singapore! You learn something new everyday…
I’ll be going to Sweden on exchange next semester, so I’ve been thinking of watching more Swedish films. Thanks for the rec! This sounds light years better than Twilight.
You’re welcome bard!
It’s airing in “The Cathay” and “Cineleisure Orchard” so do check for the available time slots before heading there. Besides Swedish, there are also other foreign films but they generally fall under the “Exclusive Showcase” category on Cathay Cineplexes’ site. Just keep a look out for those.
An exchange to Sweden? Which part are you visiting? I heard from a Swedish exchange mate that you have to visit Stockholm or it won’t be a trip to Sweden. (:
The university I’ll be studying at is right at the southern tip of Sweden, so that’s probably where I’ll be spending most of my time. Stockholm is kind of far, it’ll probably take several hours, but I definitely plan to make a visit. (:
On the bright side, the town I’ll be staying at is only an hour away from Copenhagen, Denmark!
I’ve heard good things about this film and have been waiting to watch it. I hope it doesn’t end its run here before I’ve had the chance to catch it.
Well, if all else fails, I can get the book from Kinokuniya. lol

Sweden is awesome!
Ive only spent 2 weeks there 2 years ago but its among my most treasured moments <3.
So this movies turns the role of Agonist and Antagonist around huh?If done right it offers some nice perspectives.Ive once seen a Zombie Movie where the infection and Zombiefication of 2 Lovers was actually used as metaphor for getting infected by a lethal sexual disease.One infects the other after cheating and how they lose the contact to each other through zombiefication and how they spend their last days before “dying” I sadly cant remember how it was called.
I just saw your Plurk entry…
so youve taken another Road at the moment…Who cares?Its important that you blog about whats interesting for you.Its good to read some not otaku-realted posts from time to time too ^__^

I saw the movie anddddddddd was bored. =P Maybe its just because I am not a fan of the still-frame technic the director seems to love, you know, when the camera focuses on a particular frame for what feels like eternity

@bard
Wow…that’s convenient! And you get to enjoy the best of 2 worlds (Sweden and Denmark). Work hard for your current semester and enjoy your upcoming one.
@Stifler
Hurry and catch it! It’s still showing now though they have reduced the number of screenings to one per day. There’s still the book but I read some critique that the film has successfully pieced together the gist of the whole novel. Maybe I should purchase the novel to contrast.
@Blowfish
Wow that sounds like a very complicated but meaningful film. If you recall the title, let me know, I’ll catch it.
For this film, I see some vicious cycle that’s on-going but I’m not gonna spoil it for ya. Catch it and be puzzled!
Thanks for the encouragement, you rock!
@amelia
Awww, that’s too bad. I felt that the film has utilized the still-frame technique rather appropriately.
This movie is incredible. I got to see it in the theater as well here in the US. I walked out of it and immediately wanted to turn around and go see it again.
I agree about the long still-shots. It added tension to a story that didn’t seem all that tense on the outside but is really kind of a desperate situation when you think about it.
What surprised me the most is that it was handled with such sweetness. Vampire movies tend to be full of silly sexy-ish fantasies for teenage girls (you know… the “T” word lols), and here is this movie about little kids that is somehow super mature. Man I loved this movie.
