Maken-Ki! is the Next Big Thing After Mx0
If you enjoy reading Mx0 or Mai-Hime, you should give Maken-Ki! a try. Maken-Ki! has a mix of magic, humor, fan service and martial arts. Similarly like Mx0 and Mai-Hime, we have a clueless protagonist entering a new school that’s not exactly “normal” to start with.

Protagonist Ohyama Takeru transferred to Tenbi High School that recently became co-ed as it was girls only in the past. He felt happy to be able to attend the same school with his childhood friend, Amaya Haruko, and happy to be the first batch of guys to be accepted into the school. Takeru was a happy guy, very happy indeed, but then his life plunged into chaos when…

Meet Takeru and Haruko.
#1. The female principal gave a welcoming speech that Takeru had problems decoding.
#2. Takeru learn of magic elements, magical items and that students can control magic and wield magical artifacts known as Maken.

#3. Takeru got selected by the principal to participate in a magical weapons duel on his 1st day in school and a girl had to save his life.

#4. Takeru witnessed a duel between 2 girls with not only weapons, but magical weapons.

The winner gets to keep a rarity 99 teddy bear. lol XD
#5. Though Takeru knows that Haruko is the vice president of the student council, he learns that she has magical abilities only after entering the school. So much for childhood friend ya. (:
So begin the life of a loser-like character who knows nothing from the beginning. Feeling lost, Haruko got him to join the Maken-ki, which is a committee in the student council, and it’s there where he get to make more powerful friends (mostly females) who would help him. Among them are the fierce but powerful Himekami Kodawa, sweet looking but powerful Kushihachi Inaho, yankee Akaza Chacha, yaoi fan girl Satou Kimi, student council president Takaki Furan, acountant Amado Yuuka, jealous Minaya Uruchi and nonchalant Shinatsu Azuki. Fret not if you think that this is a all girls council. There’s guy Usui Kengo who will be the bestest best friend of Takeru as they both strive to survive under an all girls dictatorship council.

Maken-Ki excursion to the hot springs.
His duties as a member of the Maken-ki would be to prevent duels and to protect the school but once a fight starts, he should act as a referee. However, Takeru is kind and can’t bear seeing girls fighting with guys in a duel and will always try to stop a match. Being a level 0 character, his level 100 council friends will try to stop him for his own sake.

Council friends stop Takeru from interfering in duels.
Thus, enter the world of Maken-ki if you’re looking for a plot that revolves around school life and friendship. Each character is unique, some cannot get along with each other, but they all work together in order to keep the school running smoothly. Be humored by the many fun moments and amazed by the series of magical fights.

If you think the girls worship Takeru, think again. lol XD

Have you read Deadman Wonderland? I really recommend it :D
“mix of magic, humor, fan service and martial arts”Sounds like everything I’ve read in the past week. But hey, since you recommended it, I might as well add this to the list P:

@blissmo
Nope, but I’m going to read it now since you’re recommended it. (:
@Shin
You might like it if you like Mx0; it’s a good read. My 8th sense tells me that this series might make it big if the mangaka continues with what he’s doing.
If you like this, you should try out Freezing… similar premise but I like it more since it’s more Mai-Hime (Freezing) than D.Gray-man (Maken-ki!). Plus… I like “Ice Queens”…
FFVIIKnights last blog post..Black Lagoon (manga) – More Omake!
Don’t know about it being ‘the next best thing after Mx0′…but the story does have promise. That Change 123 manga you recommended a while back is what I would call ‘the next best thing after Mx0′…that one’s pretty good! ^_^
53RG10s last blog post..Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto ~Natsu no Sora~ – Yay Hamster!!
The Mai HiME manga screwed up the wonder that is Mai HiME. It should be burnt. lol
If you liked High School of The Dead or Elfen Lied, you would like Deadman Wonderland. Equal number of blood and gore in both series. :D
But Maken-ki…My friend was recommonding it to me just the other day too. I think I will check it out sooner or later. lol

@FFVIIKnight
Thanks for the recommendation, I love Freezing! Great start, cool female protagonist and a brave clueless guy. I’ll be following this series.
@53RG10
Change 123 is interesting but it belongs to a different genre (as compared to Mx0, Mai-Hime and Maken-Ki). Perhaps you might like Gacha Gacha Capsule and Gacha Gacha Secret as I find them a little similar to Change 123. If you’re a fan of cosplay, you might like the Gacha Gacha series. The female protagonist has multiple split personalities while the male protagonist is a loser who tries to keep her secret safe. However, it gets repetitive along the way with too many split personalities appearing and I left it on hold until today.
@Stifler
Oh I ran away while reading High School of the Dead and dropped Elfen Lied because it’s so horrifying to me. I guess I’ll give Deadman Wonderland a try before further deciding but I’ve a feeling that I might be horrified by it.
Also try “Freezing”, recommended by FFVIIKnight. Currently there’s 3 chapters on OM and it’s rather interesting; a mix between Maken-Ki and Mx0. Seems like I’m a fan of this particular genre.
Thanks. Beautiful site. I’ll become your regular reader.
