A TV Guide For A Family Gathering
How’s the festive season so far? Recently I’ve been partying hard; late nights, staying over at friend’s house, gathering with family, relatives, and friends.
My gathering with relatives is free and easy as we’re not confined to anything. There’s mahjong, board games, buffet, and a show area where shows will be played for the day. While watching the boring The Forbidden Kingdom movie, that’s when this came into my mind. If I’m to recommend an anime at such a gathering, what would it be?
Firstly, the anime must be appropriate and able to cater to everyone from 5 to 70 years of age. No explicit, gory or ghost-like series should be recommended. My younger cousins are under-age and cannot watch explicit films while my older folks have bad health and they cannot take a scare from Ju-On.
Secondly, the TV will run for approximately 12 hours so I need either a range of short series or just one lengthy series to cover the 10 hours. Series with multiple seasons (e.g. Cardcaptor Sakura) or never ending titles (e.g. Naruto) should not be played because they cannot be finished in a day. Thirdly, the series must be appropriate for the festive season. We’re celebrating Christmas, the New Year and the upcoming Chinese New Year; tragic series like Grave of the Fireflies should be avoided.
Actually it’s hard to come up with a list of appropriate TV guide because most of what I watch are fan service flicks, have explicit violence or gore, or are from the shoujo-ai/yuri genre. But I think the below few might be appropriate.
- Nijju Mensou no Musume
My best bet for the upcoming Chinese New Year gathering. It’s a detective cum action series that I think is appropriate for both the young and the old.
- My Neighbor Totoro
If they demand a short film, I’ll play this.
- Black Blood Brothers
Interesting and exciting series that has a mix of action, romance and humor. However, it’s only 13 episodes long.
- Birdy The Mighty Decode
A simple good versus evil flick which might win over my male cousins.
I’m wondering whether “The Girl Who Leap Through Time” is appropriate for the upcoming Chinese New Year because I’ve never caught that series before. If it is, I would get the disc from my local store. Also, please recommend any series that might be appropriate because I need back-ups!

Just show something like Lucky Star or Azumanga Daioh the whole time
Watch Anime Movies from Studio Ghibli, it’s very good for Family Gathering I think… =D Especially the latest one Gake no Ue no Ponyo… Too bad it’s still not out in DVD yet I guess… xD

“The Girl Who Leap Through Time” is nice, supernatural and a small bit of romance involved.
Maybe good for teenagers.

My Neighbour Totoro is good, as is Read or Die and maybe you could watch The Wings of Honneamise. And if you haven’t seen it, Paprika.

@gordon: I’m trying to get a theme that I like, easier on the eye and works on all browsers. I’m still looking! XD
@Asperger’s Anime Blogger: Read or Die? I’m under the impression that it’s an ecchi series? I need some where the old and young folks of my family will not frown upon.
