“If I Were To Have That Hairstyle” In Real Life
I’m amazed by the hairstyles of the female characters in both anime and manga; it’s actually very fascinating to see so many hairstyles with different colors. There are those “stylish ones” that are so unique that it’s cumbersome to maintain if they are applicable in real life. There are also those “normal looking ones” where the styles are common in both real life and in anime/manga.
Today, I’m going to analyze the hairstyles of some of the female anime/manga characters. If I were to adopt that hairstyle in real life, how feasible it is? I’ll be using my common sense and real life experience to judge so feel free to join in the fun. (:
Here are the few things that I look at for each hairdo.
- Fashion Sense – My personal grading system for the style; whether its original, stylish or just plain weird. [A scale from 1 to 10 where the higher the better]
- Styling – The level of difficulty in achieving that intended hairstyle in real life. [Insanely Difficult/ Difficult/ Normal/ Easy/ Piece of Cake]
- Mobility – The level of difficulty in maintaining that hairstyle when moving around in real life. [Insanely Difficult/ Difficult/ Normal/ Easy/ Piece of Cake]
- Upkeep – The level of difficulty in keeping the hairstyle the way it it in real life. (e.g. whether water ruins the style, the amount of gel, how long the style lasts, upkeep, etc) [Insanely Difficult/ Difficult/ Normal/ Easy/ Piece of cake]
- Comments - My personal inputs.
Hairstyle #1

- Fashion Sense – 7/10.
- Styling – Piece of Cake.
- Mobility – Piece of Cake.
- Upkeep – Piece of Cake.
- Comments – You either look great in this style or fail totally to look great in this style. It’s easy to upkeep after cutting; all you need is a comb. However, some might consider this style to be too short though it’s one of the easiest to upkeep.
Hairstyle #2

- Fashion Sense – 6/10.
- Styling – Piece of Cake.
- Mobility – Normal.
- Upkeep – Easy.
- Comments – A normal hairstyle that is easy to maintain after a trip to the hairdresser. Again, all you need is a comb. As the hair is mid-length, it’ll get messy easily whenever the wind blows so I gave “Normal” for the “Mobility” category.
Hairstyle #3

- Fashion Sense – 6/10.
- Styling – Normal.
- Mobility – Easy.
- Upkeep – Difficult.
- Comments – The 2 ponytails image doesn’t suit everyone as it’s difficult to “look mature” with two things dangling on head. The style is easy to keep in place as the bands work wonders and the neat divide holds them there. However, hair at that length is cumbersome to upkeep. When washed, it takes ages to dry and requires regular combining to prevent tangles. The style also requires time and effort on the person’s part to equally balance the number of hair she has on each ponytail.
Hairstyle #4

- Fashion Sense – 8/10.
- Styling – Normal.
- Mobility – Normal.
- Upkeep – Normal.
- Comments – This shoulder length hairstyle does not require much time in styling and is easy to upkeep. Just trim whenever it gets long to get it back in shape.
Hairstyle #5

- Fashion Sense – 5/10.
- Styling – Difficult.
- Mobility – Difficult.
- Upkeep – Difficult.
- Comments – My guess is that it’s difficult to upkeep a bushy hairstyle or to even style it, especially when she has a thin layer of hair.
Hairstyle #6

- Fashion Sense – 5/10.
- Styling – Difficult.
- Mobility – Normal.
- Upkeep – Easy.
- Comments – To keep the hair in place, get a good brand of hair gel.
Hairstyle #7

- Fashion Sense – 8/10.
- Styling – Normal.
- Mobility – Normal.
- Upkeep – Difficult.
- Comments – Once the hair is straightened, much effort is required to continue to keep it straight or it will curl and go out of shape. When walking with or against the wind, be prepared to tidy or comb the hair after.
Hairstyle #8

- Fashion Sense – 6/10.
- Styling – Difficult.
- Mobility – Easy.
- Upkeep – Difficult.
- Comments – One of the firmest hairstyle around where the style would stay even if the wind blows. However, to reach the stage where the braids are neat and tight would require lots of practice and re-braid.
Hairstyle #9

- Fashion Sense – 9/10.
- Styling – Insanely Difficult.
- Mobility – Insanely Difficult.
- Upkeep – Insanely Difficult.
- Comments – An insanely difficult to get hairstyle for those without natural curls. Hours would be spent at the hair salon to curl and style something like the above. Maintaining is also another big headache as the curls can be easily lost.
Hairstyle #10

- Fashion Sense – 10/10.
- Styling – Insanely Difficult.
- Mobility – Normal.
- Upkeep – Normal.
- Comments – I’ve seen this hairdo on a friend before and the number of hair pins hidden in that head is amazing. When secured, this style can deter even the wind; it’ll stay even when she walks against the wind. Take special note to avoid pranksters who love to pull hair clips; they put the time spent styling to waste.

Especially the boys, including me, we totally envy those kickass hairstyles.
*points at some DBZ characters*

I think those DBZ styles are hard to style and maintain. I can picture a large amount of gel used just to keep the hair standing and the large amount of time spent on styling.
Styling would be “Insanely Difficult”.
I agree with no.9 the most. Even permanent curls wouldn’t look that great, if such a thing exists.
I can’t believe you didn’t include Jesse from Pokemon!

Haha!
When I see ponytails I directly think of adultvideos where the females try to look younger :P
I already fail most of the time with my hair…Curse you curly hair!Beeing thin doesnt make it easier to maintain…Lets not talk about wet weather :/
I can really feel with Gintoki from Gintama^^ (even tough my hair is a bit longer)

Curls = laziness + vanity, in my case that is XD I guess the maintenance difficulty depends on the kind of hair someone has before styling, but I found it really easy to maintain. I don’t comb my hair all that much before, and it was a mess. With curls I don’t comb my hair and twirl it instead to preserve the curls, and it’s ’stylishly messy’ XD

I have to profess to having a preference for Rei’s hairstye but I am more for Team Rocket’s Jesse… DAMN.
Miss Claymore does not seem to have any problem maintaining her hairstyle in the midst of a snowstorm.

lol, freaking awesome post. It is inspiring me to do one of my own for guys…
Though, was this written from the perspective of an Asian girl? I guess Asians have straight hair, so it’s no wonder the naturally flowing hair of a Causasian would be very hard to upkeep…

Hairstyle #9 is totally out of reach for me! I’ve seen people with permanent curls around and I envy them. It might work both ways; those with natural curls might be envying those with straight hair too.
@issa-sa
Actually Jesse almost got into the list but I decided against it at the end. I figured that her hairstyle is rather unrealistic and uncommon at the country that I’m living.
@Blowfish
Exactly, the ponytail hairstyle gives off wrong vibes. I sometimes feel that the person is trying to act cute with them. The style works for kids but definitely not for adults. :x
@usagijen
You’re right, it depends on the original style of the person too. To a person with straight hairstyle, maintaining curls might be cumbersome.
@The Sojourner
I do not understand how Miss Claymore maintains her hairstyle in the midst of a snowstorm. My guess is that she used Gatsby +++
@lelangir
It’ll be interesting to see a post on hairstyle for guys, please go ahead and make one!
The post is written from my perspective. For me, maintaining curls would be a challenge since my hair is straight to begin with. I look around and all my friends have straight hair too (though some might curl a little) but none have a style that’s anywhere near hairstyle #9. I’ve seen some Asian girls with natural curls but they’re pretty uncommon IMO. (:
I’ve been wondering about Chiaki of the Minami sisters. What is with the small poof on top of her head?
Number 9 wouldn’t be all that hard for straight-hair types, just shower before bed and braid your hair. Instant waves! After a couple brushstrokes, my hair looks pretty much like that.
Interesting article, but I think you should remove fashion sense if you’re trying to take an objective approach to anime hairstyles, really that’s your fashion sense, it’s different for different people. For instance I would give #6 an 8 and #10 a 5. Always been a fan of the short in back with long bangs and always thought buns looked kinda weird. Besides nobody rocks the bun like Carrie Fisher.
