Addicted to Board Games

It was at the class gathering where I came into contact with board games the 1st time this year. I was never a board and card games person. Monopoly was okie, Scrabbles was boring, Old Maid was lame and UNO was a mindless card game.

The Mind Cafe

The Mind Cafe at Purvis Street.

At my class gathering, we gathered at The Mind Cafe1 that was located at Purvis Street. There, we played a total of 4 games where all were short, sweet, and easy due to the 2 hours time constrain. The games didn’t matter that evening as we just wanted to catch up on old times.

However, the next time I came into contact with board and card games, it was a different thing altogether. It was the day before Christmas Eve and I was invited to a party at my friends’ house. We only managed to play 2 games but boy, they were long and more challenging. One of them was especially addictive.

Firstly I’ll introduce the not so addictive game, Democrazy.

Democrazy plays on the idea of democracy, where law cards are passed when the majority agrees. Each player has a fixed number of color chips at the start and they have the right to vote for or against for every law card. Whenever a law card is proposed and the majority agrees, the card takes effect. At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins.

Democrazy

For example, I have 2 green chips, 1 yellow, 1 blue chip and 1 red chip.

From the above, I would vote for law cards that say something like “each green chip will give you 2 points” so as to maximize my total points at the end of the day, as simple as that.

Now, I blame this board game for taking up much of my day and time. Shadows over Camelot, played it before?

For this multi-player board game, my friends and I are “Knights of the Round Table” and we will co-operate to beat the game. Our mission is to fill the table with as many white swords as possible by completing quests. Losing any of the quests will earn us black swords and the game ends when there are 12 swords on the table or when Camelot (our home base) is lost.

Our Heroes

Players have to fill the “Round Table” with white swords.

Shadows Over Camelot

There are 6 quest sections for players to watch over.

As simple as it sounds, it’s actually very difficult.

Each player has to randomly draw a card each from the white and black deck. The white card is usually something good while the black card will be the game’s move and it’s usually a disadvantageous move. To make matter worse, one of the players is actually a traitor and he will secretly try to sabotage the whole team.

My friends and I trying to beat the game

If you’re looking for a team based game to pass time, I recommend this as its fun and takes at least an hour plus to complete. I’ve been playing this game for 2 consecutive days already so no more Shadows over Camelot for now.

The next board game gathering is set to be on New Year Eve and I’m already looking forward to it. (:

If you liked Shadows Over Camelot, you might like the Battlestar Galactica board game – it has “secret Cylon” player(s) as traitors. Another good team game is Pandemic, where you’re fighting disease epidemics around the world. No traitors/Cylons in Pandemic, it’s just really hard. Why not play some games that use poker cards? Not that gambling games though. There are a few which actually ignite the “kampong spirit”. Simple yet addictive. ^^

Battlestar Galatica and Pandemic? Sure thing, I’ll check whether any of my friends have them before deciding whether to purchase them. Thanks for the recommendations. (:

I just might try poker cards for the upcoming session. My friends and I are getting a little weary of Shadows over Camelot already and some even suggested mahjong.

Take a look at Arkham Horror for the ultimate co-op game. You’ll need a big table and plenty of time though!

I love board games but mine tend to run towards the traditional. Those games remind me of Risk though – have you ever played it?

Thanks for the recommendation. I just read the description for Arkham Horror and it’s indeed time consuming. Looks fun though, it’ll be worth the try.

    @Caitlin
I heard of Risk but have never played it before. I’ll wait for the Shadows over Camelot fever to die off before we try other new games.

I have been officially banned from Scrabble at my brother’s dorm since I beat him and his dorm buddies at the game with “misogyny” on a triple word score, and “penis” on a double word score.

I own the board game Risk at home and nobody will play it with me because it supposedly takes too long to play. Plus my capitalist fiend brother would rather school me at Monopoly.
