Lunch Buffet At the Straits Kitchen
Dongzhi is an annual event that is celebrated by my family. On that day, my family will cook a pot of tangyuen and whip up a bowl for everyone. The tangyuens come in a mix of pink or white color and they’re served in a small bowl of sweet broth. They have different tangyuen flavors and broth available but my favorites are the peanut and sesame tangyuens. Broth-wise, my family can only make one flavor so no option here (same sweet broth every year).

My family believes that eating tangyuens together symbolizes family unity and togetherness and we plan to continue to do this annually. However, this year is special because we actually had a lunch buffet in addition to eating tangyuen. This year, we had our fill at the Straits Kitchen that’s located in Grand Hyatt Singapore.1

My first impression of the Straits Kitchen is that it is classy, glassy, and spacious. The restaurant has glass walls and some chefs are separated from the customers by glass panels. The different food sections are evenly spread throughout the restaurant and I walked around lost for a while because I could not locate certain sections. There’s also enough space between tables so that will prevent eavesdropping next table neighbors.

As the name2 suggests, the food is limited to Asian food only. So there’s no pizza, sushi or pasta. Expect dishes like poh piah, laksa, curry fish, and roti prata instead. The food was okay; it’s not the most delicious dishes that I’ve had but it’s neither bad too.

What’s worth the visit would be environment and the staff. The place was comfortable, nicely decorated and spacious. The staff there was the friendliest and most efficient that I’ve seen so far. They were always around to clear the plates and they smile genuinely. If not for the price, I would have recommended it to everyone. On a busy Sunday, it costs approximately S$40+ per person!
I’ll end off by sharing some photos that I’ve taken.

Looks like a nice place to eat!
I love openly designed areas where you dont feel cramped. The heavy usage of glass helps that alot.I have no promblems with small restauarants that serve yummy food tough
Those Tangyuens look pretty tasty :D
I really like your new Icon! looks good on the pictures

Thanks blowfish! I’ve 2 sets of an icon; black and white.
It’s a pity that the Straits Kitchen is slightly expensive since its S$40+ per person. >.> This year’s tangyuen was not really tasty but I finished them nonetheless. Shhhh, my family must not know of this or they will be heartbroken! XD
Tang yuan, I hardly eat them, or even had to eat them since young. Then again that place looks nice, just too expensive though lol. And you misspelled Hyatt.

Thanks panther! I canceled the extra “a”.
There’s a stall in Clementi Central that sells tangyuen. Remember the old kfc building? Near that old building, there’s a small hawker center that has a tangyuen stall. They have tangyuen with almond soup and I thought that it was unique if you’re thinking of trying. (:
oh the tangyuen stall is still around? great! can go over there next time ^^
