Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuchou Episode 1

I’m watching another old series again, this time it’s Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucchou. While searching for a new series, I went through some and many joined my “dropped” list. Again, I tried to find some vampire series, though I’m sure that I’ve covered most there is, and as expected couldn’t find any. Since vampire series are sold out, I settled for the next best alternative, zombies and the undead.

The series start eerily with zombies grabbing a high school girl into the darkness. Her body is found the next day, with no moisture or whatsoever; a dry corpse. The police has no leads and all are classified as musterious deaths but the truth is that the dead are walking at night and they’re hunting humans for nourishment. Worse, victims would join their ranks and hunt others, multiplying in numbers. The good news is that the un-dead only moves at night while the bad news is that the un-dead would always target someone who was once close to them. There’s also something akin to a master un-dead and he controls all the un-dead, using them as his tools and puppets so as to lure the victims’ close kins.

There are a few who can eliminate the undead and free the dead souls and they are actually a bunch of high school students from a mix of background. They hang out every night to protect the innocent and to eliminate the un-dead. It’s actually a strange combination as every one of them is from different background and has different character and not all can get along with each other. They’re only united by a common goal, that is to eliminate the undead.

Meet the High Schoolers

Kyouichi Horaiji (top left) is a school deliquent while Tatsuma Hiyuu (top right) is a new transfer student who always doze off during lessons. Tatsuma Hiyuu befriend Kyouichi Horaiji and often helps him out in gang fights. Komaki Sakurai (bottom left brown hair) is a tomboy and is the captain of the school’s archery club. She’s the best friend of Aoi Misato (bottom left black hair) who’s the president of the Student Council. Yuuya Diago (bottom right) is the captain of the school wrestling club.

From the clubs that they’re in and from their behavior, one can roughly guess the weapons they use when battling the undead. It wasn’t surprising when Kyouichi Horaiji wields his bokutou and Yuuya, her bow and arrow. The one that I’m curious with was Aoi Misato. I mean, what can the president of the student council do? Throw attendance books at the undead? Behold the answer below!

Sakurai’s single arrow can burst into flames and multiply to cause mass destruction!

Sakurai’s arrows not only destroy targets, but also any infrastructure along with them. Her arrow hit something spaceship size and it’s send flying to the ground. Aoi then has to use her powers to stop that falling infrastructure, so as to prevent further destruction.

Handy skill she has for a president of the student council

I have a good impression of Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucchou after watching episode 1. It’s mysterious, exciitng and I see lots of potential for character development. I think the tattoo like pattern that appears whenever they’re using their powers is actually rather cool. Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuccho is an action cum horror cum magic series. I’ll be sticking with this series for now. (:

    While cliched, the premise of this show was interesting, since it mixed elements from both Highschool of the Dead and Tenjou Tenge. Sadly, it was overlooked by everyone, for some reason.

    @Shin
    Actually when I first watched, High School of the Dead came into the mind. However,  I later noted those magical instances and D.Gray Man came into mind. However, I feel that it’s a little of both though not completely. Tenjou Tenge? Those bokutou moves do resemble a little from that series; Tenjou Tenge has more complicated moves though.

    I think we’re the exact opposite when it comes to preferences. Maybe I should get a list from you, those that you didn’t like, I might like them. hehe (:

    Eh? To me the best part of the series was this episode – guess it totally sucked me in with its “too much going on/what IS going on” premise. The rest of the series was rather blah (okay enough for me to watch all of it and some of the 2nd season) and all I seem to remember now is that Shinsen Subs posted really long translator notes at the end which could’ve been educational if I remembered any of them -_-”

    Agreed. The first episode made a big impression on me. Talk about chaos and confusion. Too bad it didn’t receive too much attention, I mean the only two people who were talking about it were me and my friend.

    I didn’t get to watch the second one though. =(

    Wow. People actually recognized this title and watched it? I’m not alone!

    It has a basic shounen plot but a very impressionable OP. However, it turned out to be on the same level as D.Gray-man, only a little better structured (not as episodic). There was some interesting character development between Tatsuma and Aoi but it never got far. Second season might have done more but I’ve seen only parts before I got tired waiting for subbed releases. Yuuya trying to interact with Komaki was pretty funny but it wore out quick. Overall, good series but overlooked by many…

    If I remember correctly, it came out around the same time as Darker than Black. Maybe it was eclipsed by Hei and Yin :)

    I went to catch the 1st episode of Zombie Loan on reading your comment. Hmm…they’re not exactly the same though. I’m shocked that the main leads are exchanging hands though. >.<

    @double
    The anime doe not totally involve zombies only, tere’s magic and some action too. After some episodes, I reckon it’s totally different from High School of the Dead.

    @issa-sa
    You’re right, I tried to read the extra notes at the end of every episode but gave up after some time. It’s educational but I can’t remember any of them. I salute their extra efforts into explanation though.

    @Ez
    What’s keeping you? You can catch this series with me together. XD

    @FFVIIKnight
    This series is exciting, it’s a pity that not many noticed it though. >.< I guess that’s what happened when famous anime eclipsed it.
