Blood Ties After Exams

To start off, I would like to apologize to Jessica for needing to drop me another email. Jessica, please read the “contact moi” page for more information, thanks.

I picked up another vampire series this time and ensured that it has real action. The sides are clearly drawn and there are battle scenes between the good and the evil. This is in contrast to the action found in True Blood where most of their action equates sex moves.

Blood Ties follows a half blind private investigator (PI), Vicki Nelson1, who unknowingly involved herself in a paranormal case in episode 1 and since then, could not “un-involve” herself from the realm of the supernatural. With a 450 year old vampire, Henry Fitzroy2 as her side-kick, she goes dare devil mode against voodoo masters, a zombie and anything that’s in her way so as to conclude her cases.

I’d say that Blood Ties covers a wide spectrum of the supernatural arena. Just to name a few, supernatural creatures like the devil, the zombie, and spirits are found and it explores the realm of magic, rituals, portions and superstitions. It’s a well balanced mix that touches on a little of everything.

Character-wise, I felt that Henry was rather cheesy on first impression. A 450 year old vampire that goes gentlemanly or “milady, I’m at your service” on Vicky? Oh c’mon, we’re in the 21st century! But cheesy Henry won me over with his aura of nobility after an episode. Vicki is the perfect female protagonist for this thriller cum supernatural flick. She’s sexy, determined and has the guts to confront TEH devil in the name of justice.

On another note, I totally dislike the character Mike Celluci3 in this series. He’s the over-protective ex-boyfriend who would go suspicious over every little thing and create a drama out of nothing, totally unbearable. The most out of the book character would be Coreen Fennel4 who’s working part time in Viki’s PI office. Her knowledge and obsession with witchcraft and curses often come in handy for Vicki’s cases. Do not offend her or be prepared to be cursed, for good.

Blood Ties is easy to follow as it is on Vicki’s case by case encounter. Each case would wrap up by the end of the episode and hence, each episode would be a new start. I’m now at episode 6 of season 1 and I got a hunch that the various small cases would only lead Vicki a step closer to her ultimate nemesis. I’d need to complete season I to see whether my prediction is right but only after my exams. Meanwhile back to studying as I’ve a couple more exam papers to go.
