Reviewing HBO’s True Blood

I’m a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. From my previous examples, one can roughly guess that I’m into the supernatural cum action English drama. There must be elements of the supernatural like vampires, werewolves, ghosts or the likes and there must be action. Thus when a buddy of mine told me that there’s a new VAMPIRE series WITH LOTS OF HEWT SEX on HBO, I immediately ran home to catch it.

True Blood is set in a world where humans and vampires co-exist “peacefully”. The Japanese have invented synthetic blood so humans are no longer vampires’ food. The vampire community decides to step up and to champion for their rights so that they can have equal rights just like humans. The story begins with waitress Sookie Stackhouse who has a strange ability where she’s able to “read” the thoughts of people. Being strong in character and on the side of justice, she saves vampire Bill Compton after she accidentally mind reads the thoughts of 2 crooks who are intending to kidnap and sell his blood off in the black market. Thus begins the relationship of human-vampire.

Every episode ends with a cliff hanger and one might feel that this is actually something good. However, I feel that True Blood’s cliff hanger is just like cutting a full movie into half and then airing part 1 this week and part 2 next week. There’s continuation of what’s happening but it’s not exactly what I would call a cliff hanger. Episode 1 is boring. It’s mainly character and context introduction and it ends very abruptly (their version of cliff hanger). Perhaps having a pilot episode of episode 1 and 2 combined would have made the whole series more wholesome instead.

One by one female victims are found dead with bite marks on their body but unfortunately Sookie’s brother, Jason, is accused as the murderer. Hence, Sookie seeks Bill help in trying to prove Jason’s innocence. While doing so, she visits vampire bar and gets into the bad books of some vampires, thus, creating more trouble.

Aside from the hewt sex scenes (human-human, human-vampire, vampire-vampire), the first 2 episodes are boring. There is not enough suspense, there is no action (aside from love making action), and the lead characters spend a healthy part of their time flirting mesmerizing each other. However, the plot becomes more interesting from episode 4 onwards when Sookie starts her investigations of the vampire world.

The vampire in this series do follow some stereotypical conventions like being unable to enter a house unless being invited, unable to walk in the day, & etc, but they’re nothing impressive or powerful like the vampires & demons that are found in Charmed or Buffy.

A good of this series would be the fair amount of time given to supporting characters. Characters that are somehow related to Sookie would be involved in the on-going murder plot either as victims, suspects or pure busybodies. Another reason to catch this would be because you’re a fan of Rogue from the movie X-men. If you are then you might want to catch True Blood because the very same actress is starring as Sookie for this series.

n

Overall, True Blood is a mediocre series. Its not spectacular but its not so bad too. If you’re looking for a slow paced vampire series with lots of hewt sex scenes, this is the one for ya.

Catch True Blood on HBO, every Sunday at 9pm.

    For once, this actually sounds like a good vampire series. I never watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer (maybe a few eps) but that was when I was younger (littler) so I was easily scared. I love Charmed but it sucks ‘cos there’s no more of it.

    And I love your new theme! You should watch Criminal Minds as well. Just once :D

    Yeah thanks blissmo, I kept changing themes because I was looking for TEH one and this is it for now. I heard of Criminal Minds from the lecturer of my Forensic Science too but I’ll do so after catching the latest True Blood episode.

    If you like Criminal Minds, the very original CSI might just be your cup of tea. I heard that the others like CSI: Miami and CSI: New York are spin-offs that are not as interesting.

    Through I for one enjoy a vampire story as much as the next guy, this one just doesn’t seem to be my type, judging from your review. If I want hot, sexy vampires, I’d read Anne Rice.

    Thanks for the review! The premise looked really interesting to me but if it’s just vampire sex and little action, no thanks. I’ve got enough to get through at the moment. ^_^

    @Kairu Ishimaru
    Thanks.
    And neh, True Blood is not a movie; it’s an English dorama.

    @huggy bear
    December okie, we can go shopping with the others too. :lol:

    @Stifler
    Anne Rice’s vampires are sexier instead. The main problem I have with True Blood is that it lacks action, I want to see some sexy judo/taekwondo/muay-thai/etc moves but there are none!

    Bwahaha…it’s good to get enough of those in real life. :wub:
