Blood Alone Volume 5 – Kidnapped!
Volume 5 of Blood Alone continues the flashback plot of the London Waltz arc with 2 more chapters (part 7 & 8) before moving on to 4 other arcs that are each of a chapter. So there’s a little zooming back and forth in this volume as the London Waltz arc are flashback episodes while Thunder, Antique Mirror, Vampire Rites, and Countracula are set in the present.

Here’s a brief recap of what happened in the previous chapter. Previously bad vampire, Caledwich, gained permission to enter Misaki’s mansion by threatening to kill Kuroe if she refuses to “invite” him into her mansion. A match at the stairway soon ensues between Kuroe and Caledwich but Kuroe emerged as the loser. Caledwich then went after Misaki who was in her bedroom while Kuroe received a lecture from Kuroe Chloe1 regarding his powers and she reminded him of his promise to Misaki before the chapter ends with a cliff hanger.
Hence, begins volume 5 with 2 chapters (London Waltz Part 7 & London Waltz Part 8) to round up the drama from the previous volume. Kuroe wakes up at the stairs to find Chloe missing and his injuries healed. Rushing to Misaki’s room, he pressures Caledwich to release Misaki and both men fought a battle to death match where Kuroe emerges as the winner. He then faints and awakes in a room where Chloe gave him some advice before she mysteriously disappears.
Returning to the present, Thunder, Antique Mirror and Vampire Rites are minor stand alone arcs with a chapter each. The Thunder arc is on Misaki’s fear towards thunder and it’s a rather sweet chapter tailored specially for Misaki-Kuroe fans. Antique Mirror deals with Misaki’s encounter with mirrors and the stereotypical belief that vampires do not have reflections in mirrors and fans will get to see Misaki feeding habit in Vampire Rites, which is what the whole chapter is about.
The drama only comes into the picture in the last arc, Countracula, which is also only a chapter. For this chapter, Misaki was kidnapped by a fellow vampire who has the hots for her. Believing that vampires understand each other better and hence, should hang out together, he tries to separate Kuroe from Misaki. What’s worse, he’s also a master vampire just like Higure so he has underlings and vampiric powers that are stronger than usual. The chapter ends on a peaceful note, hence, volume 4 wraps up without any suspense.
Overall though volume 5 lacks the suspense and action found in volume 4, it is still an enjoyable read. For this volume, the London Waltz and Countracula arc have the more important chapters where information regarding Kuroe’s ability and Misaki’s vampire origin are disclosed. I have a hunch that the mirror incident between the black cat and Misaki in Antique Mirror might have some significance to the general plot but for now things remain a mystery. I was hoping that volume 5 might reveal Misaki’s past where she was victimized and turned into a vampire but it didn’t, hence, I’m expecting more flashback arcs in the future episodes.
Blood Alone fans who rely heavily on the english scanlated version will be disappointed as there is no news coming from Infinity Studios regarding the release of volume 5 yet. However, for fans who are comfortable with traditional mandarin, Taiwan Kadokawa would be an alternate source since it has released the traditional mandarin version this October. Hopefully we’ll hears new of volume 6 (raw) so that the Blood Alone drama can continue. (:

- For differentiation purpose, I’ll call her “Chloe” since she and the protagonist share the same surname and it gets messy if I’m to call them both “Kuroe” [↩]
