Blood The Last Vampire

I’m not following any series for this season, I gave some a try but dropped them after an episode or two. I became bored and I dug up older series that I did not have the time to catch during my school term. I’m proud to say that I’ve finally completed Sola, Kimikiss Pure Rogue and REC. I placed Kimikiss Pure Rogue “On Hold” at episode 20 as schoolwork caught up on me. The holidays gave me the opportunity to kill off the last 4 episodes at my own leisure. REC, on the other hand, is a short but sweet anime and completing it was a breeze. After catching Sola and REC, I’m more for shorter series as they can be entertaining and yet be a great time saver. My quest for “short” but “interesting” anime begins and that’s when I chance upon Blood The Last Vampire.

I chance upon some screen shots of the movie and they’re impressive enough to convince me to pick up the movie. *click* *click* Roughly 48 minutes long, not bad, and soon enough I got the movie running. The plot revolves around a character named Saya and her quest to kill monsters known as chiropterans. The audience know little of the character Saya, her history and her reason for having to eliminate chiropterans. At the end of the movie, I have an idea of Saya’s personalities though her past and purpose remain a mystery.

One thing for sure, she wields a katana and has no squirm in making the scene a bloody mess when it comes to eliminating those chiropterans. Saya is like the Byronic heroine in a Gothic story (if there’s such a term). She’s arrogant, doesn’t subscribe to the norm, is intelligent and she’s attractive because she’s always shrouded in mystery.

Saya is an arrogant, angry and violent character who does what she feels like doing. I first felt that she’s rather void of human empathy as she does not show a tinge of emotion despite having brutally mutilate a chiropeteran that’s disguised as a human. She also always look so angry as though the world owes her a living. It later came as a surprise to me, a cold blooded Saya saving the nurse. She went “heroine” mode and even dissuaded her from committing suicide later. It made me look at her in a different light.

The plot is set in the US, you’ll be wondering why it’s unique since many other animes are also US-based. The catch point is that a mix of English and Japanese is used, mainly English as their Americans. Hurray! No need to rely on English subtitles. Saya can speak both English and Japanese while some characters speak only English, culture blend if I’m to call it. The down side? There’s a character, the nurse, that sounds very unnatural when she speaks in English. The nurses speaks way too slowly, I guess it’s a deliberate attempt since the nurse is suppose to be a Japanese who’s working in the US, so much for stereotypes.

Just googled “Blood The Last Vampire”, it’s a rather old movie that’s screened in the year 2000 to be exact. But hey, the graphic is too clear to be true. Are they kidding me? It’s a year 2k product but it’s graphic beat even some of the most recent anime? With clarity comes vividness and the gory scenes will make one nauseous if you just had a heavy meal.

At the end of the movie, I’m dying for more Saya action since the most of her is still shrouded in mystery. Is she really a vampire? I learn that her family name is “Vampire” but that does not mean that she’s one. What’s up with that male side kick who’s been giving orders but always helping her? She can butcher a chiropteran but dare not take the life of a human? Why is that so? And why is she killing chiropteran in the first place? Geez, so many unanswered questions.

Saya’s a vampire. She’s the only one who can kill chiropterans, the monsters that she is hunting. She is like a living weapon of sorts. The chiropterans are vampires too, after a fashion. In Typemoon terms, Saya would be like Arcueid, while the chiropterans are like the Dead Apostles.

The male sidekick, David, is just her helper. He knows about her real identity, and he’s probably the one who helped her find her prowess as a vampire, if he plays the same role as David from Blood+.

Saya doesn’t kill humans. She retains her humanity, after being raised by humans.

I’ve always wanted to get into the Blood+ fandom but was always swamped over by other currently-airing series. Thank God for the holidays!

Kimi Kiss Pure Rouge’s ending disappointed me. I actually liked the series until about episode 18-ish; it went downhill from there for me.

I always thought Blood: the last vampire was awesome. After all, it’s what made me follow blood+ a few years back and I never did regret that.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
