F8-Hello Kitty Go Races! Part II – The Live Turtle & Tortoise Museum

I never knew that there was a live turtle/tortoise museum in Chinese Garden. Thus, my friends and I paid S$5 to look around the museum. Special thanks to Mr Tan, the owner, for the special museum tour. (:

The Live Turtle & Tortoise Museum

Fortunately for us, Mr Tan was around that night and he showed us around, briefing us on the origins of the various turtles and tortoises. The museum is not large; it reminds me of the usual fish shops that are selling fishes. There are many alleviated tanks around but instead of fishes, they are filled with turtles/tortoises. It’s actually quite amazing to see turtles and tortoises all together in a place; one being land based and the other sea based.

Lovely Koi

There’s a pond filled with lots of fishes in the pond just outside the museum.

Caught in action!

I actually took many photos of the turtles, tortoises and the museum but I’ve decided not to post them because if I’m to do so, no one would visit the museum anymore right? (: Mr Tan told us of his live story of him being a turtle cum tortoise fan since young. The many that are there now are what he had bought while traveling while the others are there because he took them in. Mr Tan especially recollected the sad plight of some turtles/tortoises that have suffered abused under their previous owners and he gave them a safe haven by taking them in.

The world map

The “have visited” countries are represented by the various red thumb nails on the map. Mr Tan has visited many countries so far. O_o

In the backyard is a roofed area that houses the jumbo tortoises and turtles. They are so huge; bigger than my home’s pillow and are sooooo heavy. Mr Tan brought a bag of cucumbers and we get to feed the animals. The turtles and tortoises do not have teeth so they swallow the small cucumber bits that they have torn from the cucumber that we were holding. The trick to feeding them is to hold the cucumber firmly and to release the cucumber when it’s more than 1/2 gone. The turtles/tortoises are not cannibals but they might mistakenly bite your hand should the cucumber gets too short so take caution!

Feeding time

Guess what else I found in the backyard of the museum?

Merlion!!!

THE MERLION!?! O_o

Mr Tan not only “collects” live turtles and tortoises, he also collects items that take the shape of turtles and tortoises. He has soooooo many of them, its like a living room filled with turtle items each of different material, shape and size.

The tiny one

The above is the smallest turtle item that Mr Tan has.

Guess XD

Try to make a guess what the above turtle item is. hehe XD

    The <3<3<3 picture looks suspiciously like the tortoises are getting it on. Hmm, I wonder if you took it on purpose. :pI am guessing that is a TORTOISE POTTY.

    @Panther
    Yeah you got it right, its a tortoise potty! We thought that it was a stool when we first saw it but Mr Tan revealed otherwise.

    @Stifler
    Mr Tan told us that the male turtle has been courting the female turtle since morning, that my friends and I are lucky to witness them getting it on at night where the male finally wins the female over. :whistle:

    Well uh this is probably a really stupid question but whats the difference between a tortoise and a turtle? :wassat: Looks like a nice little museum and mr. tan must have put all his love for turtles/tortoises in it.

    Don’t worry Blowfish, its good to ask more questions. :lol:
    Tortoises are land dwelling while turtles spend more of their time in water.
