The Hour of the Mice Chapter 16-18

It has been some time since I read The Hour of the Mice and I had to re-read the previous chapter before picking up from where I last read.

A brief recap of the previous chapter; chapter 15. Kiriko is still trapped in the faculty and she dreamed of her younger days with Nagi. Mei approaches Kiriko to inform her of a group meeting that night but she learns from Kiriko that she is going to go solo from that day onwards since she feels more effective working on her own. Mei left to convey Kiriko’s message to the team and the chapter ends with a cliff hanger when a hypnotized janitor came knocking on Kiriko’s door late at night to inform her of a secret meeting at the janitor room.

Chapter 16

Chapter 16 starts with a side scene of Nagi’s brother chatting with another woman in a room. There’s a brief mention of Nagi’s talent, that he is more talented than his brother, and that he resembles his late mum before zooming back to the Kiriko arc. Kiriko sneaks out of her room and found Nagi in the janitor room after some emo moments between the duo ensues. The scene then zooms back to the group that is holding their secret meeting. The group re-evaluates their plans and starts doubting Kiriko’s intentions. However, Maki held his ground and decides to believe in Kiriko. The chapter ends with both Nagi and Kiriko staring at a cliff by the seaside.

I find Chapter 16 boring. I’ve deliberately summarized what has happened in the previous paragraph so as to show how boring this chapter was. There were a few scenes for this chapter; all of which make no earth shattering revelations that would make it exciting.

Chapter 17

Here’s where the action begins.

The aim of this series is to escape and that’s what Kiriko and group are doing. There’s enough adventure in this chapter to keep one’s finger crossed and that was what I have been waiting for. This is much more exciting than to see the group hold meetings all the time. Action speaks louder than words and plans are useless unless they’re implemented.

There are times when not having a plan beats having one. Kiriko remembers the group and invites them to escape with her and they scale a cliff to escape from the facility with Nagi as their guide. Everything seems to be going well for the group so far.

Chapter 18

They almost all made it out from that place but Mei wanted to stay all of the sudden. Being the goody big brother, Ryo decides to stay with Mei and Maki was the only one who managed to escape with Kiriko and Nagi. I feel that Mei made a bad move; she shouldn’t back out at the very last moment just when the exit is in front of her. Now not only her, but Ryo, will have to face the consequences if they’re to be caught by the faculty guards. I’ll be staying tune to see whether the trio actually make it to safety before speculating whether Maki will go all hero and try to bring down the faculty. I expect the next few chapters to be an emotionally shaky ride for Maki since his close friends were left behind and he has to struggle with the “real” world that he’ll be seeing soon.

Something off topic, the previous release was some time back that I thought the team had dropped it. Thumbs up for continuing. (:

Mei might also be going through a brief bout of jealousy wanting to be with Maki, even if it means costing their freedom. Of course, Maki sees differently and will keep trying to free them all. Nagi on the other hand… needs to deal with his brother.

Ya, Mei made a wrong move this time. Worse, she didn’t know that she’s jealous. I think Maki might try to be heroic after getting use to the outside world a little. He might break into the faculty to free not only his pals, but everyone in the faculty, for the upcoming chapters.
