Space Chimps – Monkeys Doing Space Exploration

I caught Space Chimps with Jun when we’re out shopping at Jurong Point in the afternoon. Maybe it was bad timing but there were only this many movies available when we’re there. There’s the Mummy but its at 9pm+ and we’re left with 4 movies that we have never heard of. So to play safe, we went for Space Chimps since the advertisement looks more promising than the others.

Here’s a brief summary. Man has trained monkeys to be astronauts for their various space projects. Ham III was a circus monkey until he was scouted to be an astronaut since his grandfather was a successful astronaut. Ham was sent to another planet with other monkeys that he met in the training center (Luna and Titan). There, they learn that tyrant Zartog is ruling with an iron hand and Earth’s Rover was the cause of their misery. Thus, the trio race against time and tries to free the enslaved citizens from Zartog before their auto pilot space ship blasts off and returns to Earth in 24 hours time.

Space Chimps is a suitable movie to catch with your family. It has a simple to understand plot with an expected ending. Though simple, it’s humorous, adventurous and also unique at the same time. We see human astronauts in space but what are the chances of seeing monkey astronauts? The monkeys are smart, they talk and one even tells lame jokes to keep everyone occupied when they’re on a foreign planet.

Kilowatt looks weird with that glowing head but it’s behavior and actions are so cute ^____^

My favorite character is definitely Kilowatt. Its so cute…erm in its on way. It’s head glows whenever it’s scared and it has a very cute way of speaking. You’ll love Kilowatt’s screams at the end of the show.

Overall, it’s a fun to watch adventure flick where monkeys explore an unknown planet (when something is unknown, there’s bound to be the adventurous and mysterious element). The many creatures found on the unknown planet are nicely animated though they might not be the best looking ones out there. There’s no lack of jokes throughout, expect a joke to suddenly hit you out of the blue. If you’re looking for a simple movie with lots of laugh, this might be it.

    I saw the trailer for that when I went to see Wall E. It looked like some good lighthearted entertainement. Been to the cinema too much lately though, no money now :P

    @Ez
    Its a watch and forget film; nothing spectacular. But its a good catch if you have the spare money and time.

    @Caitlin
    Ahhhhhhhh Donkey Kong!!! The one of the left is the female monkey, Luna!!! :silly:

    @FFVIIKnight
    I didn’t think that this was my type too but caught it nonetheless, limited choices in the cinemas. :unsure:

    @Catherine
    Its the exact opposite for me here. I caught the trailer for Wall-E while waiting to catch Space Chimps! :w00t:

    @Omisyth
    Ah this movie is nothing amazing like Finding Nemo, better save your penny for others then.

    @C.I.
    I’m thinking of catching Wall-E too, saw an advertisement on it while waiting for Space Chimps to air.
