First Impression for Manga – It All Starts With Chapter 1
First impression counts, that’s what I feel for a manga. Imagine reading and following a 100 chapters manga series; you’ll forget what had happened in between but the first chapter is still fresh in your memory as it has some epic moments that are unforgettable be it in the positive or the negative way.
After reading many chapter 1, below are 5 series that really struck me as memorable. What are some of the memorable chapter 1s that you have read?
The Most Stunning Death Award
Manga Title: Jack Frost

In chapter 1, front few pages, I died.

And yet, I’m not dead since I know what’s happening around me.

Omfg!!! My body did the others a “service!”
An epic way to die. XD
The Butchering Humans Award
Manga Title: Elfen Lied

I lost my appetite for breakfast.

And I lost my appetite for lunch.
And there are many other appetite losing pages in chapter 1.
The Most Disturbing Fan Service Award
Manga Title: Battle Club

I came, I fought and I lost. This is my punishment.

I witness girls fucking each other while wrestling.
And the perverted-ness runs throughout the series.
The Most UnLuckiest Award
Manga Title: Unbalance X Unbalance

I found a wallet and returned it to the owner but before that,
I’ll help myself to 7k Won from the wallet. XD

The owner found out about it and she happens to be my homeroom teacher!

Suddenly my stomach hurts, and the nearest toilet is the female’s toilet.
And I found my teacher there.
Fortunate or unfortunate, you decide. XD
The Most Innocent Award
Manga Title: Deadman Wonderland

Everyone, except me in class, died.

I’m suppose to join them too but somehow I survived.

For no reason at all, I was acquitted of murder and sent to jail.

There, the wardens slash at prisoners at will with a sword for every reason.
This sucks. -_-” I’m innocent!

Hmmm… I read all of them except for Battle Club… Good titles but right now, I can’t think of any others to add to your list.

Ah, Deadman Wonderland and Elfen Lied. Two of my favorite series. I thought the first chapter of Rurouni Kenshin was pretty good too. Seeing Kenshin own all those punks at the end was just impressive.

@FFVIIKnight
The fan service in Battle Club is quite disturbing but the humor, art, and martial arts moves kept me reading. You’ll need to master my “see no evil” move to make it pass chapter 1.
@blissmo
Will you be re-reading it? (:
@Stifler
I think I progress further for the manga as compared to the anime for Elfen Lied. I almost fainted when I see the anime effects of blood spilling everywhere and I drop the anime at episode 1. >.<
@C.I.
No problem C.I.
I’ve also updated my annotated blogroll to include the new blog. Have fun with wordpress!
I’ve only read Elfen Lied out of all of these. I must be strange as I enjoyed the violence and didn’t quite lose my appetetite at all…And I only agree to a certain point about first chapter. I think more First volume is what I use to judge a series. One chapter really isn’t enough, you’ve got to give a manga more of a chance :POh If You’re looking for something shocking, explicit and with deep storyline read Tropical Citron. I’ve not managed to get past volume one ^_^ actually…have you read it?
@Hynavian: I already have

The Queen-ka has really crazy boobs.
Y’know, just to add on, Hayate no Gotoku really struck me from the beginning. It was a premise so outlandish I had to go take a look. You should include this category too, Hynavian!

@Saya
Nope I haven’t read Tropical Citron but I’ll give it a try when I’m free.
I have a terrible weakness towards mutilation scenes and having them in chapter 1 is something I would not forget; Elfen Lied flash across my mind as a memorable series. I agree that we need to give manga more chances since chapter 1 is not everything. I would have missed out on a great series like Blood Alone if I’ve dropped it at chapter 1 since the whole plot kicks in only in chapter 3 or so. (:
@blissmo
Deadman Wonderland must be your favorite manga!
@The Sojourner
Queen-ka?!? XD
@C.I.
Thanks for the recommendation, that’s another manga for me to look into. They’ll keep me occupy till school re-opens.
my haruhi dear, what manga are u reading girl? can’t u stick to girly romance manga like the rest. lol please don’t kill me. ^^;anyway i think just 1 chapter is hard to leave an everlasting impression unless u change it to maybe the first volume.

Oh recently, due to positive blog influence, I’m reading FFVIIKnight’s manga recommendations (Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge and Lucu Lucu) and Blissmo’s recommendation (Deadman Wonderland). I do read girly romantic manga like Kiss Yori Mo Hayaku and those love triangle grandmother love story like Vampire Knight but they come out too slow for a super manga reader like me.
Coming to waits, where’s my latest Claymore chapter!!!
I think 1st chapter sometimes leave a deep impression too. The above are the few that will come into my mind when I think of memorable chapter 1s. What comes after chapter 1 is another story though; I would read a volume to determine whether I would continue reading or not.
