Kim’s Family Restaurant

Posted on

I choice Korean cuisine when a buddy of mine gave the option of Mc Donalds or Korean cuisine for dinner. It took an hour plus to get there from my workplace due to traffic jam & heavy rain. Drenched, I reached the restaurant in a very cold and hungry state. However, I’m in for a surprise when I got there.

Buddy told me that there’s a Korean restaurant behind the Shell petrol station that’s located at Lorong Kilat and I was shocked because I never knew there was one near Upper Bukit Timah. Kim’s Family Restaurant is not easy to spot, in fact, it’s well hidden and requires some uphill walk. After entering a small lane, there’s some uphill walking before passing a coffee shop and few other shops to reach the restaurant. I almost passed the restaurant without realizing but luckily my friends stopped me. On entering, I felt that the restaurant was crowded and a little cramped.

However, the friendly waiters, side dishes and main courses made the trip worthwhile.

DIY Beef

We get to cook the beef before gobbling it down with cabbage.

After having our fill, we had free slices of water melons provided by the restaurant. We spent a total of $40 and walked away bloated. It’s a reasonable price when shared by 3 and we had fun cooking, chatting and tasting Korean cuisine in a cozy environment. Special thanks to Soc for asking me out to cheer me up. You rox babe! :p

  1. OMG! That looks sooo DELISH! I think it’s a bit fun to cook your own meal while you chat it up with friends…unless you’re already starving! It’s also really neat to find these “off the beaten path” type of restaurants. It’s like you’re going on an adventure and you find a diamond in the ruff! ^_^

  2. The food is horrid…horrid…horrid…
I ordered the oxtail soup & bi-bim-ba, the oxtail soup was tastles and the herb was like thrown in the last minute it was not infused into the stock at ALL. Bi-bim-ba is jus so – so. The ginseng soup is equally as bad when my friend visited the same day for dinner. I wonder why Jade Seah reviews are good in her program. Now, that makes one wonder if dishes are prepared based on celebrity. In any case, don’t bother going, it is a very BIG BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!

  3. I agree totally with Ong.
In short: looks good, taste Sucks!
Long Queue, Long wait and the rice is cold.
Barley drink is like tap water, no taste at all.

You can still go and try how bad it is, if you really must go.

  4. The dishes were full of MSG. After the meal, I felt like I had taken a whole tablespoon of MSG, leaving me thirtsy even until the following day.

  5. I totally agree with Ong too!

Have you ever been served with by an unbearable bad attitude staff? If you want to experience that you can patronise this restuarant and they are really good at it!

My frenz and I were served with a plate of food on top of the other plates (side dishes / appetizer dishes) in a restuarant before, we were shocked and surprised this happened during our visit there. (we are paying for the food and not begging for it!)

Well, though one of the staff had apologised on behalf of her sister for doing that and serve us with a complimentary soft drinks.. frankly, the first impression last and they have well damaged their reputation. Will not patronise again!

If you really want good Authentic Korean food (and I mea really good with reasonable price), let me know. There’s one near Mosque Street actually.

  6. I went today for dinner, long queue. Seriously i dont know why so many people, we ordered ja jang myeon, and it is like tasteless. No taste at all. and the spicy pork is like so damn hard to chew. overall, bad…. very bad… and we were served rotten watermelon at the end. Soooo Disappointed

  7. worst korean food i’ve had in singapore. The boss was busy walking around and was hardly even in the kitchen, ask the son why his father isnt cooking anymore – he said he only supervises now.

Anyways, food came out way too quickly, tasted like is been sitting there for awhile. Bugogi was bland, overcooked, dry and at the same time watery (yes, dont know how they managed to accomplish that).

Bibimbab was tasteless and kimchi chigei had not depth (in a way like instant noodle soup type), took way longer than other food.

And, they do put MSG in their food, i tasted it, and it left my mouth super dry.

DISAPPOINTED, WILL NEVER GO AGAIN OR RECOMMEND!
